MBABANE – The Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) has assured its membership that all six tournaments will continue once the deadly coronavirus has been defeated.

In a statement released yesterday, COSAFA General Secretary Sue Destombes said the member associations need not panic because all tournaments will be staged once the circumstances allow.

“As FIFA president Infantino said last week, the first priority right now is to save lives during the coronavirus pandemic and football will have to take a backseat. The health of our people across the southern African region must be foremost in our minds and we at COSAFA are doing our bit to create awareness around the virus and how to stop its spread as we continue to stay in touch with our stakeholders and football family,” she said.

Pandemic

The tournaments which have been affected by the pandemic include the COSAFA Senior tournament Women Under-17 Championships, which would have kicked off yesterday In Mauritius. Hanging in the balance is the COSAFA Under-17 men’s championship and Under-20 tournament, which is scheduled for December.

“We obviously take our lead from government in the region with regard to football activities and for now, these are on hold. But rest assured, once we are able to resume with our tournament schedule, we will do so,” she said.
She said COSAFA’s mandate to develop football in the region has not stopped.

“We are here to develop the game in the region, on and off the pitch and that will continue to be the case after the coronavirus pandemic has subsided,” she said in the brief statement.
