MBABANE – Former Mbabane Highlanders’ coach Meck Mwase is in self-isolation in fear of the coronavirus.

Mwase, who is now in charge of the Malawi national team, recently came back from the Netherlands where he went for an internship programme at Dutch Elite League side, FC Utrecht. He arrived last Monday in Malawi and he had since gone into a 14-day self-isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic as he is coming from one of 19 nations that the Malawi government has listed as risk high countries. According to cosafa.com in a telephone interview from his Namiwawa home in Blantyre, Mwase said the trip to the Netherlands was fruitful though his mission ended prematurely due to the shutdown.

“For the few days I stayed there, I saw and learnt a lot. Our colleagues are advanced in terms of technology use. They put a lot of emphasis on videos analysis of everything they do from trainings sessions, fitness and matches. Everything has been shut down in the Netherlands because of the pandemic and I had to leave earlier. However, I did a lot of what was supposed to be covered and there is a chance to go back and do more,” he said.

Suspend

Mwase has since commended CAF’s decision to suspend the 2021 AFCON qualifying matches, saying the well-being of players should come first. “It’s a pandemic that we can’t run away from and the lives of our players are a priority so we are going to wait for the next decision from CAF,” said Mwase. Mwase led the ‘Bull’ to finish second in the 2015/ 16 MTN Premier League but his stay in the club was cut short the following season.
