LOBAMBA – Local football followers should brace themselves for a long football drought.
This was after it was confirmed last night that the local MTN Premier League games would take a two-month break, which means action will most likely return in May.

The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Executive met with the Board of Governors at EFA Technical Centre in Lobamba where the parties unanimously agreed that Premier League action take a two-month break in view of the coronavirus pandemic that has led to a national emergency being declared by Prime Minister Ambrose Dlamini.

statement

The governors agreed that the PM’s statement must apply in as far as resuming their games is concerned. This means football followers will have to wait until May 20 to know when the games will resume.

The meeting was attended by teams’ representatives and led by PLE Chairman Peter ‘Touch’ Magagula. “We will wait for government to lift the state of emergency before convening here again to map a way forward. This decision to suspend all games is really out of our control and we appreciate that teams understand that,” Magagula told those present.

Meeting

Most elite teams were represented in the meeting, except for a few. There were only two executive members present and this did not go down well with the governors, who questioned their absence.
The MTN Premier League is left with only eight games while the EswatiniBank Cup is in the quarter-finals stage.

Late

The two-month break also means the league will finish very late.
Some of the team representatives included Mbabane Swallows’ Adrias Lukhele, Mbabane Highlanders’ Benson Dlamini, Moneni Pirates’ Thembinkosi Dlamini, Green Mamba’s Vusi Kunene, Tinyosi’s Mbuso Dlamini, Milling Hotspurs’ Ivan Munro and Mbabane Citizens’ Mandla Simelane, to mention a few while the Governor’s executive was only representative by PLE Chairman Magagula, executive members in Bongani ‘Bhanyaza’ Mdluli and PLE COO Pat Vilakati.
