MBABANE – local sports enthusiasts will be disappointed to learn that the popular Mbabane parkrun has since been cancelled for now due to the coronavirus outbreak.

A statement from Parkrun South Africa President Bruce Fordyce confirmed that it is not only in Eswatini where the parkrun has been stalled but across southern Africa including South Africa and Namibia. “We are writing to let you know that, in line with public health advice, we have taken the decision to close all parkrun events across South Africa, Namibia, and Eswatini with immediate effect. Initially, this closure will be in place until the end of March, however, this is largely to bring all parkrun countries into the same time frame and we very much expect closures to continue through April at least,” reads the statement in part.

Famous

The famous Comrades Marathon runner added that going forward, they would update park-runners regularly and promised to communicate important information as soon as it was appropriate. “We know that this message may be a difficult one for you to receive and many people will be wondering what to do without their regular weekly catch-up. Please rest assured that we are working hard to develop our strategy so that we are able to support the health and happiness of park runners around the world during this difficult time.

Remaining active is incredibly important and we are working on ways to encourage and support that. However, please do not arrange group gatherings at your parkrun venues while parkrun events are suspended. Thanks for your continued support and please know that the parkrun family is there for you,” he concluded. Bruce is perhaps best known for his nine victories in South Africa’s famous Comrades marathon. In the 1980s, he broke the Comrades course record five times and his winning time in 1986 stood unbroken for 21 years. He also won several ultra-marathons around the world including the famous London to Brighton race (three times) and the United States of America (USA) 50 miles championships.
