MBABANE - ‘Golf is not an easy sport, but I guess I love the pain. Renowned corporate executive and ardent golfer Sifiso Nxumalo is the reigning champion of the United General Insurance (UGI) Leg of Lamb played at the Royal Swazi Spa Golf Club last Friday.

Nxumalo, who is Sanlam Eswatini’s Chief Executive Officer, put up a brave challenge in the Leg of Lamb described by many in the golf fraternity as the best Friday competition being held in the country, thus far.
Playing a 14 course handicap, he rose against all odds to lay his hands on the to-die-for first prize.

Thrilled

Besides the fantastic prize on offer, the lanky Nxumalo was visibly thrilled by the honour of coming out tops against 24 other golfers, who were equally seeking glory as they trekked along the posh fairways and nerve-wrecking rough.

Indeed, he recorded a decent 21 points in this nine-hole stableford tournament and was a point ahead of his runner-up Sibusiso Ndzabandzaba.
The latter narrowly outwitted Ricardo Kruger on a countback. Placed on position four and five were the likes of Qiniso Dlamini and Ephraim Kunene with 19 and 18 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, the nearest the pin on hole 3 went to Ephraim Kunene while Shane Groening scooped the longest drive on hole 8.
Commenting about his sterling performance, Nxumalo observed that his game was on point, especially his tee shots. He noted that his excellent drives normally bred easier approach shots that resulted in good scores hole by hole.

“Of course, one can always do better and hopefully one day maybe I will win again with a better score. I’ve been playing for more than seven years now and I thoroughly enjoy the sport. It’s not an easy one I must add, but I guess I love the pain,” Nxumalo said.

He added: “I play a lot at the Royal Swazi golf course and have featured in a couple of the UGI-sponsored Leg of Lamb competitions.”
His main weakness or strength, depending on how one looks at it, is that he never resists an invite to a golf game.
“Circumstances allowing, I’m definitely on the golf course and I look forward to participating in more of the UGI competitions on Fridays,” Nxumalo highlighted.

United Holdings’ acting Chief Executive Mzingaye Ndlovu applauded the golfers for sweating it out under sweltering weather conditions for the love of the game.

Brand

He assured them that United Holdings, the parent company of UGI, remained enthused by the way the competition was being run and the value it was adding to the brand.

“It’s a great honour and privilege for our brand to be associated with such a professionally-run competition. This is, indeed, value for money for us considering the rich networks that we’ve built since the partnership began in November last year.”
