MBABANE – Veteran golfer Jurie Mentz is one of two golfers to have won the United General Insurance (UGI) Leg of Lamb with an impressive score of 23 points.

The 62-year-old Mentz played superbly well last Friday to match the record score set by eminent Corporate Executive Pastor Phil Mnisi in December last year. Mnisi’s record had remained unmatched until last Friday’s Leg of Lamb played at the Royal Swazi Spa golf course.

Mentz, who played handicap 10, literally showed off his golfing skills in the entire nine-hole tournament with magical putts that earned him priceless birdies. He was two points ahead of another highly-determined experienced golfer, Andrew Mkhonta. Equally, Mkhonta was two points better than professional player Raymond Mathonsi, who finished third with 19 points.

Mentz attributed his gallant performance to the stiff competition he got from the members of his fourball, who comprised Paul Fortune, Earn Sauerman and Kelwin Fortune.

“It was a lovely day of golf for me and the weather was fantastic. Winning this competition has a sentimental value because I personally knew the late father to the sponsor, Philip De Sousa, when I stayed in Manzini.
