MBABANE – New Sihlangu coach Dominic Kunene will reportedly earn E30 000 per month.

The reputable Young Buffaloes and national Under-20 football team gaffer was announced Kostadin Papic’s successor three days ago. Classified information leaked by impeccable sources to this publication suggested that Kunene would take home the increased amount as compared to that of the last liSwati (Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga) to lead Sihlangu on a fulltime basis. The latter was reportedly earning E25 000 per month back in 2016.

“He will coach Sihlangu on a fulltime basis, so he has to relinquish the Young Buffaloes job,” alleged the impeccable source. The annual salary, calculated on the monthly scale, will shoot up to E360 000. Deputising for Kunene is Moneni Pirates and national Under-17 soccer team coach Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini. Reports suggest the latter will not be forced to leave his Moneni Pirates job as he could work on a part-time basis. His salary at Sihlangu could not be immediately ascertained.

The coaches, in reaction to the appointments, had said they were yet to learn about arrangements regarding their current teams. Buffaloes CEO Sandile Gwebu, when sought for comment yesterday, said he was still waiting for a correspondence from EFA regarding Kunene’s appointment. “He remains ours unless told otherwise, so I can’t be talking about searching for a new coach at this stage,” Gwebu said briefly. Papic, on the other hand, was reportedly earning around E70 000 per month. EFA CEO Frederick Mngomezulu, on national radio, said affordability in terms of finances was taken into consideration when recruiting the new coach.

Professionally

EFA Marketing and Communications Manager Muzi Radebe said his office was doing things professionally when appointing the national team coaches and they would be detached from their respective teams. He clarified that the executive committee only appointed the head coach, who in turn appointed his assistants. “The issue of the salary is between employer and employee, so I can never know the coach’s earnings,” he said. Kunene and Dlamini join the Eswatini national football side on a one-year contract. They are part of a new-look technical bench comprising former coach Anthony Mdluli and trainer Mbuso Gina. The former, who was Papic’s predecessor, is the new goalkeeper coach.

The new coaches’ first major assignment, on the other hand, will be an away Group I Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Congo on the last weekend of March 2020. Sihlangu started the 2021 AFCON qualifiers on a low note after losing their two opening games. They lost 0-3 and 1-4 to Guinea-Bissau and Senegal, in that order.
