MBABANE – It might be a ‘very short year’ for road race cyclists, if the draft calendar of activities from the sport’s mother body is anything to go by.

According to a schedule for 2020 released by Eswatini Cycling Association (ECA) President Sihlangu Nhlabatsi, only two road races would be staged in the new year. These are the National Road Championship on April 12 and the Siteki Bicycle Race in November. The former is the association’s flagship race and the winners in both male and female category get national team jerseys, among other prizes. A notable road race that is yet to appear in the calendar is the Mafutseni Classic, which is usually staged around May. The Toy Ride set for November 22 is not a race even though it will be staged on the road. It is a fundraising drive, mainly for needy children.

According

The rest of the races (seven), according to the calendar will be off-road (mountain bike). They include the Nedbank Imvelo and Ngwenya Glass MTB. Meanwhile, the first event of the new decade, according to the programme, is an individual time trial on February 9 at Phocweni in Matsapha. The events will be 38 and 19km long. As the name suggests, this is a race against time. Entries open next Monday (January 20). The next stop will be at the Sisekelo MTB Challenge on March 28.
