MANZINI – It is the first time for Denver Sundowns not to reach the quarter-finals of this tournament in five editions.

Their hub rivals Manzini Wanderers beat them in the penalty shootout after a 2-all draw in regular time. Late substitute goalkeeper Sandile ‘Onyango’ Dlamini was part of the winning formula when he saved second goalscorer Mxolisi Bhembe’s penalty which was Sundowns’ third. The latter had already missed their second through Phinda Ginindza before Siyabonga Ginindza fumbled the fourth well over the crossbar.

Wanderers had only missed their first through Captain and defender Menzi Gamedze who hit the woodwork before netting the rest. The fifth was unnecessary for Wanderers after midfielder Mpendulo Ngidi scored the fourth.

Ngidi had also found the equaliser for Wanderers with an edge-of-the-box humdinger into the back of the net.
got eliminated

This was the first time Sundowns got eliminated from the Last 16. However, a great game and fantastic atmosphere that was befitting the hub derby.
Sundowns had gone ahead in the 40th minute through Siphamandla Maseko who beat the goalkeeper Ncedo Gamedze after he spilled a shot by impressive winger Linda Maphalala.

It was Wanderers who went ahead in the 74th through a free header by Jose Machado just after Manqoba ‘Spider’ Maseko had a penalty saved before he scored in the shootout.

Sundowns equalised through Mxolisi Bhembe, who capitalised from another goalkeeping blunder as Mamba could not deal with a well delivered cross to the far post and allowed an easy finish for the scorer.
