MBABANE – Can Young Buffaloes’ attacking midfield sensation Sandile ‘Saviola’ Gamedze set a new record in the MTN Premier League since 2008/09?

That looks very much possible for the young player, who is also said to be wanted in Sudan and Switzerland after impressing in national team Sihlangu Semnikati colours in the past year. The long-standing record of 19 goals was set by Cameroonian Etienneh Massoye in his first season with Mbabane Swallows back in 2008/09.

Interestingly, Massoye, a striker back then before joining Swallows’ technical bench, which he serves currently, went on to win the goals’ award for the second consecutive time the next season, netting 18 goals in 2009/10. Among the players still playing today in the MTN Premier League, Green Mamba striker Musa Dlamini took over the reins in the 2010/11 season when he rattled the net 16 times to win the award while with Swallows. No other player has won the award with 18 or 19 goals as Massoye.

awarded

However, Saviola already boasts 15 goals in 13 first round games and will be looking to add more when the second round resumes this weekend. He has also been awarded E8 000 for being the first round top scorer with his 15 goals which include once quadruple scored against Pigg’s Peak Black Swallows and at least two hat-tricks.

This was far more than his set target of 10 first round goals and 15 by end of the season. He is four goals away from levelling Massoye’s 19-goal record and five away from setting a new one.

Worth mentioning is that when most locals failed to match Massoye’s record for some time, the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) said for the award to be won, at least 15 goals must be scored while the sponsor, MTN Eswatini has introduced the E5 000 hat-trick incentive to encourage players to score as many goals even though this is only for Y’ello Sunday weekends whereby the sponsor markets its products and integrates with football fans.

potential

Both the player and his coach, Dominic Kunene, could not be immediately reached on these impressive figures and the potential new record the former is about to set with the former unavailable on the network at the time he was sought while the latter’s cellphone rang unanswered.

Meanwhile, Green Mamba’s midfielder Mxolisi Mkhontfo is the closest to Saviola but with just eight goals. Buffaloes host Mhlume Peacemakers at Mavuso Sports Centre leading by two points to second-placed Mbabane Swallows, who travel to Nhlangano to host Tambuti on Saturday.
