MBABANE – He just can’t stop scoring. That is Eswatini’s South Africa-based international attacking midfielder, Mbombela United and the national team, Sihlangu Semnikati captain, Felix Badenhorst. He is now the top goal scorer in the GladAfrica Championship League (formerly South Africa’s National First Division League) side with seven goals.

This is despite the team’s poor showing in the first round of the league as they are placed third bottom on the log table and fighting relegation. His last goal came on Friday afternoon when he netted a penalty during the 1-2 defeat by Cape Umoya United away in Cape Town.
The Mpumalanga-based outfit boasts five Eswatini players being Badenhorst, striker Sabelo ’Sikhali’ Ndzinisa, midfielder Njabulo ‘D4D’ Ndlovu, winger Justice Figuareido and goalkeeper Sandile ‘Nkomishi’ Ginindza.

They have accumulated 12 points after 13 games in the 16-team league and they are just ahead of Jomo Cosmos and Royal Eagles, who occupy the relegation spots. Badenhorst’s sterling performance comes after serving some time on the sidelines due to an injury that saw him miss the national team, Sihlangu 2022 FIFA World Cup home game against lowly-ranked Djibouti in October. Since his return he has never looked back but scored goals for his team.

He netted a brace in the 4-0 win over Richards Bay a fortnight  ago and he was also behind  the Nedbank Cup qualifiers win over JDR Stars when he slotted in a scorcher from outside the 18-yard area, sending the team to the Last 32 of the tournament.
His scoring prowess has been better than that of striker Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa, who has so far recorded two goals. His struggles for the form that made him a fierce striker continue since his return from a career-threatening head injury that kept him out for nearly two seasons.

Badenhorst said he was at his best form and he wants more as the team is not safe from the axe. He said they were worried about relegation but believe that they will turn the corner.
“Yes I feel good and I hope to continue with the good performance and score goals for the team. We are worried about the position we are in but we have a great team to turn things around,” he said.
Mbombela United will face fallen giants Moroka Swallows next Saturday at home, KaNyamazane Stadium; kick-off 3:30pm.

United are now under coach Simon Phiri Ngomane who took over from Siyabonga Bhembe, who was deployed as an assistant along former Eswatini international Dennis ‘Yuki’ Masina.
