LUSAKA – The closer to the bone, the sweeter the meat. This overused English adage holds true for Eswatini’s hard fighting National Under-20 squad, who edged closer to their first qualification for semi-finals of the COSAFA Under-20 Youth Championships in the turn of the 21st century with a 2-0 win over Seychelles here yesterday.

It has been a gruelling and torturous 34 years since the youth squad reached the knockout stage of the tournament when Eswatini last hosted the tournament in 1985.
Yesterday’s win by the energetic Dominic Kunene’s young battalions lifted Eswatini to joint leadership in Group C with Angola on six points, setting up a titanic clash this morning in the final games of the group stages.

Angola are top in Group C merely on a better goal difference (+5) and today’s epic clash at the modest Nkoloma Stadium will be a ‘final’ or call it a decider on who goes to the semi-finals.
Win or lose, either side could qualify on the one slot afforded as ‘best runners-up’.

But all things considered, Kunene’s charges, with no frills, no thrills, just a workmanship-like performance, did enough yesterday to put themselves on the cusp of glory or at the very least, banishing a 34-year-old record to the dustbin of history.
