MBABANE – TZD athletes dominated the Maputo FNB 10km City Run on Sunday as 84 athletes made it to the race.

The team only sends their social runners as their elite athletes are enjoying an off-season break. The athletes comprised those from the club’s, Siteki, Manzini, Lomahasha and Pigg’s Peak branches who all endured the cold sea temperatures to conquer the race.

The route of the race covered the new bridge across the sea where hordes of athletes from other countries including Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe participated. TZD Sports Club Director Zakhele Dlamini said it was an interesting experience for the locals.

excitement

Dlamini expressed his excitement about the commitment shown by the local runners as theirs was not necessarily to compete but to work their bodies out and improve their performance.
Not only TZD athletes made the trip, but some athletes from other clubs including the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) and Correctional Services were part of the race.

REPS’s Samukelisiwe Tfwala claimed a podium finish as she finished fifth in the female open category. Dlamini, who is also the Athletics Eswatini (AE) President, said as an association and club, they were learning something from events like the FNB Maputo 10km City Run.

Dlamini applauded FNB and the Mozambicans for a well-organised event which demonstrates a good relationship between the stakeholders.

“This was a well-organised event which was hosted for the first time in that country. I have been to a similar event in Durban, South Africa and we are learning something as a federation and club. It is my dream that one day we have such an event in Eswatini and we are building relationships and negotiations are at an advanced stage to have similar events to spice up our calendar,” he said.

Dlamini added that they were creating friendship with other federations through the assistance of CAA-SR, as President Moses Bantsi and the Secretary Aleck Sikhosane were also part of the event.

“The pursuit is that, where there is FNB, let us have such a competition.

The presence of other athletes from REPS and Correctional Services, who participated in the race, was also good for the country. Attending such competitions increases their performance standard and I am happy that the country had an athlete in the podium in Samukelisiwe Tfwala,” he concluded.
