MBABANE – Talk about a late bloomer. That is the story of Eswatini’s own John ‘Mashesha’ Thomson from Mormond and his partner in South Africa’s Maurice Zermatten who compete in the South African Cross-Country Championship Series  Special Vehicle Class A category.

After the Parys 400, which is the sixth and final round of the championship, which took place in South Africa’s Free State Province between Friday and Saturday; ‘Mashesha’ and Zermatten were on the podium after finishing second, both in their class and in the championship.

Soar

They defied all odds to soar to the top after a frustrating outing in the first two rounds when they could not finish.
‘Mashesha’ and Zermatten competed in a Zarco Challenger.  ‘Mashesha’ was the driver while Zermatten opted to navigate.
Overall winners were Lance Trethewey and Adriaan Roets (LT Earthmovers BAT Venom).

The final standings and finishing times were yet to be released at the time of compiling this report.
According to information sourced from the official event’s website, on Saturday, the leading team opened the road at 8am with competitors having to complete a 170km loop twice to be declared finishers.

There was a compulsory 30-minute service break at DSP after the first loop and the race restarted at noon. There were various vantage points from where spectators were able to view the action.
