MBABANE – Senegal players have reportedly been offered an increased appearance fee for the Sihlangu game.

Kostadin Papic’s men will host the ‘Lions of Teranga’, as Senegal are widely known, in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on November 19. Following reported unrest over allowances after the recent 1-all draw with soccer heavyweights Brazil, the Senegalese Football Federation is said to have moved swiftly to increase the appearance fee for the Sihlangu game from 1 150 Euros (about E18 000) to E2 150 Euros (E35 385) each player. This is according to yesterday’s exchange rate.

“We have decided that for November matches against Guinea-Bissau and Swaziland (Eswatini), the players will get €1,000 extra on top of the €1, 150,” Senegalese Football Federation President Augustin Senghor was quoted saying by InsideWorldFootball.

According to the report, there was tension between Senegalese players and the national football federation over appearance money and travel conditions for the recent friendly against Brazil. According to France Football, the players turned down an appearance payment of €1,000 (E16 433) compared with the usual E18 000.

“Our bonuses are very much inferior to those made by many other African teams.
“And now we are being offered an amount below the sum fixed for several years. We don’t play for the team for the money, but you must be reasonable,” one unnamed player was quoted as saying.

Regarding travel, the player said teammates and staff had flown economy class between Paris and Singapore, where the Brazil match took place, and claimed the flight took 26 hours in total.

“Often, we must pay the cost of an upgrade ourselves on long-haul flights,” he added.
Meanwhile, the international friendly match against Brazil on October 10 ended as a 1-1 draw, with Bristol City’s Famara Diedhiou equalising for Senegal from the spot after Sadio Mané had been fouled, following Roberto Firmino’s chipped opener.

Sihlangu players, on the other hand, are said to be entitled to E200 for training allowances and E1 500 for winning bonuses.
Asked if there were incentives for Sihlangu for both today’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) decisive qualifier against Zambia as well as the Senegal clash, Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe said it was an administrative issue.

“Issues pertaining to players’ allowances are internal and administrative. There are also budget constraints, so there is nothing to comment on the issue,” he said.
Some Sihlangu players, on condition of anonymity, had alleged that no incentive had been announced ahead of today’s game.
