MBABANE – Over 80 brave and daring cyclists are ready to push their limits in the Inyatsi Swazi Frontier Mountain Bike (MTB) challenge that starts today.

This is the 14th edition of the three-day mountain bike race which was launched in style at Matsapha, Rudi’s Kitchen on August 8, 2019. The race will start at Hawane Resort just outside Mbabane, ending at Maguga Lodge in the outskirts of Pigg’s Peak. Excitement and anticipation for the race was hovering in the air yesterday at Hawane as local and cross border riders collected their entry numbers and goodie bags.

The vision of this event, as explained by one of the race organisers, Lesley Foss, was to develop the sport in the kingdom of Eswatini, alongside tourism, while contributing to communal development in terms of infrastructure, especially in the remote settlements, as well as putting Eswatini on the world map as the iconic mountain bike destination.

Accommodated

“Most of the riders from South Africa arrived today (yesterday) and will be accommodated at the Hawane Resort. Everyone is excited and we are looking forward to yet another fun filled experience in the beautiful trails and scenery of the country,” said Foss. South African rider Johnny Diedericks, who will be riding under the Windhoek Lager team, said this was his first ever mountain bike and he was physically strong to face the challenge.

“This will be my first mountain bike and I am mentally and physically ready for the challenge. I am looking forward to enjoying riding on the trails of Eswatini. I am here to have fun and get the first-hand experience of an adventurous ride ever,” said Diedericks. Two of Eswatini’s junior cyclists from Dig Deep team, Lungelo Mlangeni and Sihle Dlamini said their mission was to win despite being first timers in the Swazi Frontier race. The duo said they always trained together, normally starting from Ezulwini via Lozitha, Zombodze, Mdzimba and back to Ezulwini valley.
