MBABANE – Is coach Thabo ‘Koki’ Vilakati headed to another football giant?

The former Mbabane Swallows and Manzini Wanderers gaffer is heavily linked with a surprise switch to Mbabane Highlanders. He left Wanderers under unclear circumstances about a week ago.

It was reliably gathered that Vilakati was targeted in a bid to boost the Zenzele ‘Ace’ Dlamini-led technical bench. The latter, who was recruited to perform the technical directorship role, is currently coaching the side.

“Highlanders are not the only team interested in the services of Vilakati,” alleged an impeccable source.
Highlanders Head of Communications Bhekisisa Dlamini said he only learnt about the possible switch through the grapevine and nothing was formally reported to his office.

“My office will wait for an official correspondence and if there is something to report, the media will be informed through a press conference,” said Dlamini.

On Sunday, Vilakati was at Somhlolo National Stadium during the game between Wanderers and Green Mamba and he was seen in talks with ‘Ace’ after the game.
However, this is not to suggest that the talks are linked to the said imminent transfer.

When reached for comment, Vilakati repeatedly asked to be contacted at a later stage, saying he was in the middle of something. The last attempt was made around 5:40pm.

Another team that was reportedly interested in Vilakati was Manzini Sea Birds but team Chairman Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane refuted the claims.
“I’m in South Africa at the moment and I’m not aware of the interest in ‘Koki’,” he said briefly.

Meanwhile, Vilakati last coached Highlanders over five years ago. He was in charge when the ‘Black Bull’ were runners-up to Green Mamba in the 2012 EswatiniBank Cup. The latter won 3-1.
