LOBAMBA – Manzini Wanderers are finally breathing following a surprise 3-1 over holders Green Mamba here yesterday.

After a frustrating start to the 2019/20 MTN Premier League campaign, losing 0-4 to Mbabane Swallows and playing a 2-all draw with Black Swallows; the trio of dribbling wizard Mike Dombo, midfielder Mpendulo Ngidi and towering defender Thami Zulu were on target to ensure their favourite side got off the mark in style before over 400 cheerful spectators at Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday.

The win, which was the biggest against the same opposition since the 2007/2008 season, steered the Manzini-based outfit off the bottom four after round three. They now occupy the eighth spot with four points.

For Green Mamba, who finished the game with 10 men after the sending off of defender Sanele Khumalo deep into stoppage time, it was a setback in their league title defence. It is early days,  they remain fourth and five points adrift of pacesetters Mbabane Swallows. Mxolisi Mkhontfo’s first half response proved to be just a consolation. Caleb Ngwenya’s shot themselves in the foot and they played out of character.

They were not the side that beat Denver Sundowns 4-0 in the last outing, as they were clumsy in their defending while the Mthunzi Ginindza-led Wanderers had perfected their combination. It took seven minutes for Wanderers to set the tone for a flawless outing, with Dombo firing a strong contender for a goal of the season from about 25 yards. While Green Mamba were stuttering in clearing their lines, he fired a rocket to stun Thokozani Mkhulisi between the sticks.
