LOBAMBA – He emerged as the best tennis player. That is South Africa’s Duncan Krisjan who was yesterday crowned the Acers Men’s Tennis Open Championships 2019 champion.

Krisjan is a coach at Real Athletes Tennis Academy based in Bedfordview, Gauteng, South Africa and considering his outstanding tennis skills, he deserved to win.

The tennis star defeated another excellent tennis player in Mozambique’s 17-year old professional tennis player Bruno Nhavene.
Nhevene is Mozambique’s current reigning national champion for both the seniors and juniors and he is based in Morocco after getting an International Tennis Federation (ITF) scholarship to study full-time at that country’s National Tennis Centre.

Krisjan defeated the Mozambican junior star 6-3, 6-4 in a highly competitive match. It was tennis displayed at its highest level as spectators were kept nerve-racking at the edge of their seats with the powerful smashes that seemed to nearly crack the SBS National Tennis Centre – OlympAfrica floor open. The players’ moves and thinking behind play were exhilarating to watch.

Krisjan had reached the final of the Men’s Singles Championship after defeating another great player in colleague and countryman Siyabulela Nkachela 6-3, 6-3 during the first semi-final.

Nhavene on the other hand had reached the final after beating Zambia’s number one tennis player Edgar Kazembe 6-2, 6-4 in the second semi-final.
The Mozambican had beaten Zimbabwe’s Derrick Namanya in the second quarter-final 6-2, 6-4 while the champion had won the first quarterfinal 7-6, 8-6, 6-1 against Mozambique’s Zito Simao.

Krisjan took home the grand prize of E18 000 plus a trophy, while Nhavene got E10 000 and a smaller trophy.
The Men’s Double Championship final did not play as it was very late and the semi-finalist had to share all prizes equally.
The organiser of the tournament and Acers Sports Academy Captain Bruce Gama said the inaugural tournament was a huge success.

“Players from outside came through as expected and the display on the new tennis courts gave the tournament its uniqueness,” he said.
He did not have a dream start in this tournament as he apparently did not feel very well and was not at his best.
He thanked businessman Sibusiso Dlamini for the support and appreciated Eswatini National Tennis Association (ENTA) for their backing. Gama said this was the beginning of great things for Eswatini tennis.
