In this week’s edition, we get to chat to Dig Deep Cycling Club road race sensation Sihle Dlamini.
He tells us about the three things he cannot live without and his ambitions to be a cycling coach.
Sanele Jele:  Tell us briefly about yourself?
Sihle Dlamini: I’m a 21-year-old gentleman from Buka, Ezulwini.I am very passionate about the sport of cycling.
SJ: Who inspired you to join the sport?
SD: My older brother Sihawu. He told me it’s a good sport that helps one to keep fit and explore the world.
SJ: Talking about exploring the world, have you ever taken a ride outside the country?
SD: I have only raced in South Africa. It was a road race staged in Johannesburg where we raced along professional riders and it was an awesome experience. I wish to race in Europe especially in the Tour de France.
SJ: What other sport were you good at before you decided to focus on cycling?
SD: Soccer and running.
SJ: When did you start your cycling career?
SD:  I started in 2015. It has been an enjoyable experience so far.
SJ: Tell us about your achievements so far.
SD: Races that I’ve won are Mantenga MTB 35km which was in 2017and Simunye MTB 40km. Others are Usutu MTB 35km (2018), STIX MTB 2019 30km and East to West Road Classic 130km.
SJ: Which do you prefer? Road or mountain bike (MTB)?
SD: I enjoy both road and mountain bike events. However, I prefer road races because they are not challenging as compared to MTB events.
SJ: How did it feel to win the East to West Road Classic and beating strong contenders in the race?
SD: It was like a dream come true for me and my secret to winning the race was endurance. I had to maintain the same pace even when I felt like throwing in the towel.
SJ: If you were to get E10 million in your bank account, how would you spend it?
SD:  I can take good care of my family and share some of the money with them. I can build my mother a house. I would also invest in property.
SJ: What is your dream holiday destination?
SD: France, especially to see the Eiffel Tower and go to the places where the Tour de France race is staged.
SJ: What kind of music do you listen to?
SD: Give me deep house and hip hop and my favourite track right now is Love yours by J.Cole.
SJ: Who is your role model and why?
SD: My mother because she always wants the best for me.
SJ: What is your dream car?
SD: It has to be a BMW M5...
SJ:One quote that keeps you going.
SD: Dreams never grow old.
SJ: Three things you cannot live without?
SD: It has to be my bike, family and my phone.
SJ: What do you want to do after retiring from cycling?
SD: I want to be a cycling coach and help unearth young talent that can conquer the world.
