MBABANE – The national women’s team Sitsebe’s fairytale run in the COSAFA Women’s Championships ended abruptly yesterday when they were thrashed 7-0 by Zimbabwe in the Group C decider.

Sitsebe needed a win or a draw against Zimbabwe to re-write the history books by qualifying for the semi-finals of the COSAFA Women’s Championships history for the first time.

With only the group winners qualifying for the semi-finals, it was heartbreaking for the Anthony Mdluli-led side. They also missed out on qualifying, as the best runner-ups following the setback.

They were in the race with Botswana and Malawi from the other groups in the race for the best number two.
It was their first defeat in the tournament, which is being played at Port Elizabeth, South Africa. They had earlier beaten Mozambique 3-1 and Angola 4-0.
Zimbabwe, who are known as the Mighty Warriors, saw Emmalulate Msipa scoring four goals while Mavis Chirandu bagged a brace. Rudo Neshamba ensured the route was complete.

Group winners Zimbabwe will now clash with Banyana Banyana tomorrow in the semi-finals.
However, this is not the worst score recorded in this year’s edition, as South Africa’s Banyana Banyana thrashed Comoros 17-0 last week.
Sitsebe players can still come back home smiling after their improved performance.

The duo of Tenanile Ngcamphalala and Nomvula Sanga each scored two goals in the tournament while the trio of Phumzile Dlamini, Sibonelo Gwebu and Nonhle Simelane contributed once each to the team’s seven-goal tally.
