MBABANE – It’s a new day in your favourite column, we are celebrating the success of Cebile Dlamini who has lost 38kg of body fat and mass through exercise.

Dlamini shared her story with the Transformation Corner and if you are searching for inspiration to begin your own journey, this one is just for you.
This is how she did it:

When did you start exercising and what was the motivation behind it?
My transformation journey started around June last year, where I was strictly doing banting which is primarily a low-carbohydrate, moderate protein and high fat diet named after English undertaker, William Banting.

In November I took up aerobics. I was tired of being a big person and I wanted to fit into all the clothes that I desired. Most of all, I wanted to live a healthy lifestyle.

What was your weight then compared to now?
I was not a fan of scales but when I started exercising, I weighed 110kg. I kept a journal where I recorded my weight after each month and right now I am exactly 72kg.

What challenges did you encounter and how did you manage to overcome them?
It is very hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle at home because everyone cooks and eats whatever they want. Cutting down on sugar, fat and carbohydrates was a challenge at first. Once I started, it became the reason that pushed and encouraged me to stay focused because I had a goal in mind.

I had to change my attitude and believe that I could do it. My body had no choice but to adapt and a couple of months later, I could see the results and it motivated me to work even harder.

Guide us through your training routine:
I am a big fan of aerobics. I hit the gym three to four times per week and each session takes about two hours. While I was in Nhlangano I used to train at Jazzy Gee Gym and now Badeli from Mbabane is my fitness coach. Aerobics work on the entire body and I must say that I am much stronger, active and fit now.

What are your fitness and weight goals?
Currently I weigh 72kg, which is 38kg lighter than when I started. My target weight is 65kg but I do not want to be too skinny.
What sort of nutrition changes have you done?

I used to be a carefree eater. Junk food, mainly snacks, fizzy drinks, chocolates and potatoe chips were my favourite. I used to eat a lot of deep fried fat chicken. I am now more cautious of my food options. I have learnt to replace all of that with lots of greens, fruits and vegetables, cut down on starch and instead of having fried chicken, I go for skinned chicken breasts, fish and drink lots of water for detox and rehydration.
What advise can you share with people dealing with weight issues?

Physical transformation is not an overnight thing, whether you want to lose weight or build muscles. It is not easy but it takes self-discipline and focus. My advice would be: never give up and keep pushing. Excuses do not burn calories but hard work does.
