MBABANE – Mbabane Highlanders are sweating over tying down their South African striker Thabiso Mokenkoane, ahead of the Eswatini Telecom Charity Cup.

Teams including South Africa’s National First Division League side, Mbombela United, Mbabane Swallows and Manzini Wanderers, are reported to be after the signature of the player whose contract with Highlanders expires end of August. A source close to the matter said the player indicated that he would like to leave the team when his contract expire at the end of August, which is after the Charity Cup billed for August 11 at Somhlolo National Stadium. The source said the player is likely to play for Highlanders during the Charity Cup on August 11, as he will still be serving his contract.

Highlanders have already lost the services of another South African player in Vusimuzi Zungu, who was unveiled by rivals Mbabane Swallows on Monday as one of their new signees. They also lost Captain Colani ‘Chocco’ Sibandze who joined Manzini Sea Birds.

Offer

“If Highlanders fail to put a good offer on the table, the player is likely to leave the team after the Charity Cup. There are some teams who have come with good offers and now the ball is in Highlanders’ court. The player has even indicated to some of the administrators at the club that he would like to leave at the end of his contract,” said the source. Highlanders Communications Officer Bhekisisa Dlamini said the contract issue of players, especially Mokenkoane, was being handled by the Managing Director, Ally Kgomongwe. “I cannot go into details concerning the player’s contracts as they are being handled by the MD. He is our player and training with the team in preparations for the Charity Cup. We are also going to unveil our new signees I believe before the end of the week,” he said.

Unveiled

Some of the players expected to be unveiled by Highlanders include former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundown’s Punch Masanamela, who joined the team on Friday.
