MBABANE – Sihlangu will face an Angolan national team dominated by Under-23s.

This is after the Angola Football Federation (FAF) summoned the national team for the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifier match against Eswatini. According to the website, angop.ao (Agencia Angola Press), FAF called up last Tuesday 24 players of the country’s domestic championship to represent the national team in the qualifying matches for the Africa Cup of Nations for home-based footballers to take place from January to February in Cameroon. The Angolan news agency reported that it had learnt that the call-up was mostly made of the Under-23 players.

Preparation

The team, led by Silvestre Pelé, will camp next Friday to perform two training sessions and leave for South Africa on Monday for preparation. Worthy to note is that 12 players for Angola, who played at the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, failed to show up for a meeting in preparation for the CHAN Qualifier match against Sihlangu. Only members of the FAF and technical staff of the national team, led by the Serbian coach Srdjan Vasiljevic, were present. Their teams cited fatigue after their participation at the continental showpiece.
Most of these players are out of the squad summoned by FAF ahead of the game with the locals and it remains a mystery if the omission of the experienced players will make it any easier for Sihlangu to progress to the third round.

Sihlangu will first play host to Angola on Sunday at the Mavuso Sports Centre for the first leg of the qualifier. The Kostadin Papic men will then travel to Angola to honour the second leg, taking place on August 3, 2019 in Luanda. Sihlangu is yet to record a win in an official match under the tutelage of the Serbia-born strategist.
