PIGG’S PEAK – “We want to use Maguga Dam as the finish line for next year’s marathon to provide international athletes with the scenic beauty of this place.”

These were the words of Jabulisa Foundation Chairman Thami Shongwe after the inaugural Jabulisa Foundation Marathon held in Pigg’s Peak on Saturday. Gobolondlo Hall was the starting and finishing point for all the three categories which included the 21km, 10km and 5km. The foundation plans on making this marathon an annual event after they hosted a successful one with participants from outside the country also participating. The 21km was won by South African athletes which were Nedbank South Africa’s Bong’nkosi Mavuso for the men open and Jozini Athletics Club’s Musawenkosi Nsibande from Kwazulu Natal for the ladies open.

“We have learnt a lot from this marathon and we have figured where to improve in the next editions. We did not encounter much challenges and would also like to extend our gratitude to the business community that has supported this initiative,” he said. Shongwe further highlighted that Pigg’s Peak plantations was the major supporter of the event. Some of the supporting businesses include FNB Eswatini, Ekhaya Funerals, Akuse Construction, Kobwa and Buy Cash among others.

“The attendance was good and I want to believe that next year we will have a bigger and better event and further take advantage of the beauty of our area and use Maguga Dam as the winning point for people to see the scenic beauty of the area,” he said. Shongwe also expressed his appreciation for the presence of Minister of Tinkhundla and Administration David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala, who represented the Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Harris ‘Madze’ Bulunga, who is abroad for business. He said it was heart-warming to see top government officials grace such events and further appreciated the assistance of the Eswatini Athletics led by President Zakhele Dlamini.
