NGWENYA – He is conquering the country in the mountain bike (MTB) races.

That is South Africa’s Christo Carelsen, who yesterday won the Ngwenya Glass Eswatini Mountain Bike Challenge 72km. He clocked 03:28:15 hours to shake off countryman Alain Slabbert. The latter finished the race in 03:28:40 hours.
Completing the list of the top three finishers was Dewald Lotter, who is also from the neighboring country and he reached the finish line after 03:35:46 hours.
cross the finish line

The first liSwati to cross the finish line was fourth-placed Sihawu Dlamini in 03:48:56 hours and he was closely followed by the equally forceful William Kelly. Kelly clocked 3:59:17 hours.
There is no liSwati that has ever won the Ngwenya Glass MTB Challenge since its inception. Last year’s first liSwati was Muzi Shabangu, who was third overall with a time of 03:43:05 hours.

There were about 400 cyclists that registered for the four races being the 72km, 42km, 22km and 7km.
The Mountain Bike Challenge was conferred with Eswatini National Mountain Bike Championships status for 2019.

amongst his favorite

The 33-year-old winner of the 72km, Carelsen, said the Ngwenya race was among his favourite routes due to its challenges. He said he enjoyed coming to race in the country and he will continue to do so even in the future. The Mpumalanga-based cyclist said he won the Ngwenya Challenge for the first time having dominated the Imvelo MTB in the past years.
“On Thursday, two days before the race, I told myself that I will be coming here to win. I’m happy that I’ve been able to achieve my goal. I have been struggling to win the race in the past editions and to me now, it is my favourite route in the country,” he said.

Missing out on the race was the defending champion Sidney Declay from South Africa, who finished last year’s race in 3:18:48 hours.
