MBABANE – Former Mbabane Highlanders coach Happy Simfukwe has been linked with a move to Manzini Sundowns.

Information gathered by the Sports Desk is to the effect that the former Moneni Pirates gaffer is likely to be granted a contract by the team for the 2019/2020 league campaign.

Sources have indicated that there are talks between the team and the coach and has been asked to provide supporting documents to finalise whether he takes over or not.

The Zambia-born strategist, together with South African National First Division side in Mbombela United head coach Milton Dlamini were the guest coaches at Sundowns during the 2019 Bible Society Cup.

Simfukwe needs no introduction in Eswatini football as he was one of the most successful coaches with Highlanders, leading the black and white outfit to the EswatiniBank Cup title in 2010 and taking home the coach of the award tournament.
He also led Moneni to the same tournament title in 2015.

Sundowns were under the tutelage of Ernest Mavuso, who had a short contract with the team that elapsed at the end of the 2018/19 season.
Sundowns Public Relations Officer (PRO) Muzi Matsenjwa said the issue of recruiting a coach was directly handled by the team Chairman, Mark Carmichael.
The PRO said nothing had reached his office and he was yet to be briefed by the chairman pertaining a coach recruitment.

However, he said he could confirm that Mavuso had a short-term contract with the team and there was a coaching vacancy at the club.

Break

“Nothing has yet been concluded as we are currently on break. Simfukwe and Milton were the chairman’s guests at the Bible Society Cup,” he said.
Matsenjwa further highlighted that they had engaged Simfukwe over the possibility of leading the team in the past but for now there was nothing concluded.
“There is nothing I can say for now. I do not know of their (Simfukwe and Carmichael) talks,” said the PRO.

Mastenjwa also disclosed the need and the team’s target to acquire the services of a CAF A Licence coach for their academy.
“We take the academy seriously and we need a highly qualified coach,” he said.

Meanwhile, Carmichael was also drawn for comment and said they were waiting for the season to start to conclude the issues of hiring a coach.
“It is premature to talk about it, hiring a coach requires a lot of aspects,” he said. The chairman said nothing was concluded with Simfukwe yet but all stakeholders will be informed about the issue in due course.
