MBABANE – This was their winning bonus if they had lifted the Bible Society Cup last Saturday at Mavuso Sports Centre in Manzini.

Capital city giants Mbabane Highlanders needed to win the third edition of the tournament. They played for the first time in the ‘Bible in the soccerfield’ tournament. For the first time, it involved four teams as opposed to two which had been two-time consecutive champions Manzini Wanderers and runners-up Manzini Sundowns in the preceding editions.

“Our new director, Ally Kgomongwe, had pledged to the players that if they won the tournament, each of them was getting E1 000. They lost the first game and missed the winning bonuses,” confirmed the club’s Head of Communications and Secretariat Gcina Dlamini. He said Kgomongwe’s intentions were ensure the players were his top priority to the extent that he will be pumping in win bonuses to motivate the players.

“He believes if players are well incentivised, they will always be hungrier so they can earn the incentives,” Dlamini explained.
At least three of the players who were asked about this affirmed that ‘we made a loss’.

“That was meant to motivate us and we did all we could but it just wasn’t our day. At least we know there’ll be more of these bonuses going forward,” said one of the senior players.

Another said they were only encouraged by the fact that Kgomongwe was speaking bonuses and clearly more concerned about their welfare. Kgomongwe also confirmed he had pledged the bonuses.

Highlanders lost 5-3 to Sundowns in the second semi-final of the one-day tournament after a goalless draw in regular time.
Sundowns then went on to lose 4-0 to Wanderers, who defended the title they won against same opposition last year.
