EZULWINI – The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) has been forced to pay out over E3 million in claims and allowances.

This is according to the financial report presented to delegates by EFA CEO Frederick Mngomezulu on behalf of Vice President and Finance Committee Chairman Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane during a General Assembly at Sibane Hotel in Ezulwini yesterday. Claims and allowances for the year ending December 31, 2018 shot up to E3 034 530 from E2 656 142 in 2017. This is an increment of over E370 000. Sought for comment after the meeting on his reaction to the figures, EFA Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe, said there were many bodies that were paid sitting allowances on top of claims by support staff as well as activities of the national squads.

“Other claims, for instance, are for instructors of programmes. We also had most of the national squads in action, so the players also had to be given allowances. “As the programmes increase, more money is needed to finance them,” he clarified. The claims are expected to shoot up to E3.5 million at the end of the current financial year. This is as per the budget presented in yesterday’s meeting. Meanwhile, the financial report showed an operational deficit of E8.5 million. The previous year, there was a surplus of E2.4 million. Mngomezulu clarified that was due to current economic challenges, as  his office got about E4.9 million from government from the expected E10 million.

“This is an operational deficit. It doesn’t mean the organisation is currently in deficit,” he clarified. EFA, on the other hand, is projecting to earn an increased E24 million. This is as per the budget estimates presented yesterday.  The budget estimates for 2019 and 2020 are at E23.5 million and E24.1 million, respectively. The expected income has shot up by over E7 million as compared to last year’s figures. The increase is due to the revised grant from FIFA, which has shot up from E7.6 million to E14.4 million each year. Interestingly, the budget for EFA is two times more than that of sport in the country as a whole, which is at E6.7 million.

Budget

According to the budget, which was presented for the first time in the history of the annual general meeting, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to pump in E2.4 million from this year.
