MANZINI – Despite a sluggish start, Mbabane Jazz recorded a 67-54 win over Imbumbe during the Elite Men Basketball League.

During the early exchanges, Imbumbe seemed to match Jazz pound for pound but with each passing minute, the former ran out of steam. Imbumbe, who were parading new signee, T-Boy Mkhabela from RSSC Tridents, were ambitious in the opening stage however some of their well-orchestrated moves ended up being intercepted by the opponents in the last quarter of the court.

Meanwhile, the hosts, who welcomed back Kuda Zvareva, who was playing for Manzini Steels last season, attacked in droves and managed to penetrate the opponents’ half and scored crucial two pointers. New kid on the block, Perry Dladla, who was signed from defending champions, Manzini Superstars also played a pivotal role in aiding his side to win on the day. However, Kuda had to limp off the court after he sustained an injury in the third quarter. The first quarter ended 12-6 with Imbumbe trailing. The score, however, was not a true reflection as the visitors sometimes had an upper hand than Jazz.

Imbumbe captain Thando Mkhatshwa was a marvel to watch as at some point he single-handedly helped his side match the opponents. He scored crucial two pointers and also Malusi Nxumalo had a major impact when he was on the ball. The hosts started to get more in control in the third and fourth stanza. It was the experience of Lwazi Mchobokazi, Mzwandile ‘States’ Vilakati and Phinda Dlamini who eventually inspired the 2017 champions to a 67-54 win.
