MBABANE – “I play to enjoy not to compete.” These were comments by yesterday’s MTN Monthly Masters golf tournament winner, Tim Mavuso, when asked about his secret to winning the June edition of the monthly competition.

Mavuso won the competition which was played in a modified stableford format with an impressive score of 40 points after a count back. The tournament, which attracted 70 golfers, was played at the Mbabane Golf Course. A presentation was later held at the nearby Mbabane Golf Club. Mavuso, who is on handicap 17, surprised many when he was announced the winner during the presentation which was done by the club’s vice-captain Sifiso Dhlamini, MTN’s Meshack Maseko and Afi Dlamini.

“On a serious note, today I won because I have been regular here, (golf course) trying to perfect my skills. My putting was good today, which contributed to me winning the competition. I try to play not to compete but to enjoy,” he said.

Mavuso last won this very competition in December last year in his 10-year-experience of his golfing career.
Notably, newcomers were among the top 10 winners on the day. These were SRA’s Vusi Dlamini, Sifiso Zubuko, Mbuso Dlamini and Ray Dlamini. The likes of Kenneth Nkambule, Waki Lorence, Brian Mayisela, Eerfan Dada and Steven Mavuso also made it to the top 10. The winner and runner-up also received five gigabytes of data.

The vice-captain of the Mbabane Golf Club, Dhlamini, thanked the golfers for showing massive support.
“We want to urge golfers to support the sponsor by using the services that they provide on the day. This will go a long way in ensuring that the sponsor continues to support us even next year,” he said.

Meanwhile, MTN Senior Manager Consumer Meshack Maseko also lauded golfers for the massive turnout.
“MTN usually partners with people who are passionate and golfers have shown their enthusiasm for the sport as they come in numbers despite the chilly winter conditions.

We also plead with golfers to support our products as in doing so golfers might find themselves winning incentives,” Maseko said.
The tournament is sponsored to a tune of E160 000 by MTN Eswatini.
