MANZINI – Barely a few weeks after hub giants survived relegation by a whisker, the club chairman Mehluli Nhlengetfwa dropped a bombshell yesterday – a resignation letter.

The South African-based businessman who was hardly a year into his three-year contract as club chairman, tendered his resignation letter to the club via e-mail yesterday afternoon.

The Times Sports Desk has reliably gathered that Nhlengetfwa pointed towards lack of support and cohesion within the club’s high echelons of power as one of the reasons he opted to throw in the towel.

“He has had to fight many battles to steer the Wanderers ship to calmer waters and did not have the support he needed in some issues. The fact that it took so long for him to be officially handed over the reins yet he had spent a lot of his money buying players and basically running the club has left him despondent,” a close source to Nhlengetfwa said.

The source said Nhlengetfwa had to spend more time trying to bring harmony within the warring factions at the club, which eventually affected the team’s performances.

Happy

“Maybe they will be happy now that he has stepped down and they can take over the club and run it the way they want. The back-biting and back-stabbing was becoming too much for him as he had to rely on people who had ulterior motives while pretending to be executing their respective duties within the team. It became unworkable,” the source added.

Interviewed last night, Nhlengetfwa briefly confirmed he has stepped down.
“Yes, I have tendered my resignation and have explained my reasons to the relevant people in the club. That’s all I can say for now. I am going to find another project very soon and I am hopeful that I will be accepted with warm hands,” Nhlengetfwa said.

Wanderers’ director, Sandile ‘Chief’ Dlamini, pleaded ignorance to the resignation letter earlier in the day.
“I have not received any letter, if there was something like that I would know.

We met with him last week where we had a chat on plans for the forthcoming season after we escaped relegation at the end of the season,” Dlamini said briefly.
He only confirmed that Nhlengetfwa was handed a three-year contract as chairman to run the club.
Nhlengetfwa had earlier been assisting the reigning EswatiniBank Women’s Cup champions, the Wanderers Ladies before moving to assume chairmanship of the senior team.
