MBABANE – Talk about coming to the rescue.

That is new Mbabane Highlanders boss and South Africa-based businessman Ally Kgomongwe, who has declared that he will pay for the players’ accommodation costs for the month of May even though it is not his responsibility. He had been asked to react to reports suggesting that he might be paying the May salaries as well, but came out to set the record straight.
“I’m going to pay for their accommodation because they are all over in the streets. “Currently, players are homeless and it is very painful, so I’ve treated it as a matter of urgency,” he said.
Most of the players are said to be staying in rented flats, so this means Kgomongwe, who was in the country two days ago, will settle their accommodation bills.

Asked on the way forward, Kgomongwe disclosed that he would return to Eswatini this weekend to finalise the rest of the structures and roll out his plans, stressing that he was in the country in the past weekend to meet the players and assess the situation. “The current management committee will remain in office, as we’re still to finalise the structure. We need to involve everyone in putting the structures in place,” he said. Before Kgomongwe made an undertaking to pay to accommodation costs, this publication had wanted to confirm reports suggesting that he would assist in paying the salaries for May, but stressed that it was not the case.

Kgomongwe was officially unveiled as the new Highlanders boss by the patrons on May 20 in Pretoria, South Africa, to take over from lawyer Zweli Jele and Marwick Khumalo, who officially stepped down towards the end of the past month. The club’s patrons appointed a task team to ensure a smooth transition in the leadership changes. Feedback on the final resolution taken regarding the transition challenges is yet to be communicated. Highlanders CEO Thulani Khumalo’s phone rang unanswered when sought for comment regarding the accommodation and salaries issues. The last attempt was made at 6:55pm.

Meanwhile, Highlanders are preparing for the one-day off-season tournament styled Bible Society Cup on June 15. There has been instability in their camp ahead of the game following threats by players to stay out of training until their salaries are paid. The date for the start of the preparations is today.
