MBABANE – Despite having a disappointing season, Mbabane Swallows still have something to celebrate.
Swallows finished fourth and outside the top three in the league for the first time since the 2015/16 season, but they are still ranked 41st in Africa and eighth in Southern Africa.

This is according to the continental football rankings released last Thursday (May 30, 2019).
They are ahead of the likes of South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs, Cape Town City and Bidvest Wits, who are all out of the top 50.
According to the charts, the top-ranked team in the region is South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.

Other notable teams in the region who appear in the top 10 are Zambia’s Zesco United (12) as well as South Africa’s duo of Orlando Pirates (23) and SuperSport United (25).
TP Mazembe from the DR Congo are the continent’s best.

The rankings are based on the performance in recent CAF inter-club tournaments. Swallows, who are the only ranked Eswatini side, were eliminated in the group stages of the CAF Champions League in their last outing in 2018.

However, Swallows’ joy might be short-lived following their failure to qualify for any of the continental football tournaments for the first time since the 2010/11 season. The tournaments are the CAF Champions League and the Confederation, which start in August this year, following the change of the African football body’s calendar.

Teams that qualify for the tournaments are Young Buffaloes and Green Mamba after winning the EswatiniBank Cup and MTN Premier League title, in that order. The former will compete in the second-tier club tournament styled CAF Confederation Cup.
Swallows PRO Jackson Dlamini could not be reached for comment on the rankings, as his phone rang unanswered last night.
