MBABANE – Some were given an option to stay but accept salary cuts. This is how bad the economy is in Eswatini, as even giant clubs like Mbabane Highlanders struggled financially in the last three months of the recently finished season - they also had trouble paying players’ salaries.

It has been revealed that Sundowns, who also suffered the same fate, have since given free clearances to almost the whole regular team and the players can now join teams of their choices. Among the list of players is nearly the complete first team save for goalkeepers Phila Mamba and Lwethu Simelane to name a few of those spared.

Those with free clearances are Ndumiso ‘Sikhokho’ Shongwe who was signed from Manzini Sea Birds over two seasons ago, former Highlanders midfielder Sibusiso Mkhonta, former Green Mamba winger Muhle Shiba, foreigners Mukendi Ben Biaya, Kangumbu Reagan, Djembe Ekwe Willie Alfred signed from Manzini Wanderers, Frank Antwi, Phumlane Dlamini and Jerome Ntshalintshali who are back with Royal Leopard.

“They gave us our clearances in different intervals at the clubhouses, as we were only expected back in training on June 3 for the off-season Bible Society Cup tournament on June 15 at Mavuso Sports Centre in Manzini,” confirmed one of the foreign players.
The locals also confirmed the latest.

“We are out of the Bible Society Cup since we have got our free clearances. We were also told by the team’s doctor, who gave some of us the clearances, that the chairman said he had financial challenges pertaining to some of us have high salaries. He offered to cut some of the salaries by a thousand, and asked us to stay but we cannot accept that,” claimed one of the local stars, something also affirmed by some of the foreigners.
Another said the team made it clear their salaries were allegedly a challenge.

“Some of us already know where we will be next season and have already signed pre-contracts, since many of us had their contracts finish soon after the Vovovo game,” said one of the transferred stars, who said only their less known teammates from the regions and Academy are remaining and will play in Bible Society Cup. The players said it was sad that they just got their clearances without salaries and player’s cards, yet they expected to get paid and then put on transfer as is the case now.
