MBABANE – Four years later, COSAFA teams are still fighting for only E500 000.

This is the first prize money for the winners of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup, which gets underway in Durban, South Africa, tomorrow. The ‘carrot’ remains unchanged since 2015.

Reports in the past year had suggested that the prizes could be revised but COSAFA Media Officer Lynda Greeff said they would remain the same, when sought for comment yesterday.

According to the prize breakdown, runners-up will get E250 000 while the third-placed side will pocket E125 000.

Quarter-final losers will compete for E75 000 in the COSAFA second-tier tournament, which is played under the Plate banner.
There are prizes for outstanding individual players. The best player, goalkeeper and sharp shooter will pocket E20 000 each.
Meanwhile, Sihlangu are in Group A alongside Mauritius and Comoros.

They begin their COSAFA campaign against Mauritius tomorrow at 4:30pm.
They need to top the three-team group to set up a date with holders and regional heavyweights Zimbabwe in the quarter-finals next Saturday (June 1). The national outfit’s best performance was back in 2016 when they won bronze ahead of guest nation DR Congo following a 1-0 win in Namibia. It was the last time they won a COSAFA match.
