GABORONE – TZD Athletics Club long distance runner Sithembile Nzalo was among the best in the Diacore Gaborone Marathon yesterday after she finished in the top 10 in the 21km.

The 21-year-old was up against top athletes in the continent including Zimbabweans, Kenyans and South Africans, among others. She was making her second appearance in the race. Nzalo said she was happy with her performance despite that it was a fast race and the runners sprinted from start to finish due to the flat route.

She said maintaining the same pace was a challenge to her. She was in the company of Mpendulo Dlamini who is her pace setter.
“The route was okay but challenging due to its flatness. You have to keep one pace from start to finish and it was never easy for me. I’m happy with my performance though because I was able to improve my time,” she said. The full results for the race were due to be released late afternoon yesterday.

Other TZD athletes who performed well are Machawe Matsebula who also finished in the top 10 in the men’s 10km. He was followed by his brother Mcolisi Matsebula among the emaSwati. Also leaving a mark were Simiso Ngcamphalala and Musawenkhosi Mamba. TZD Athletics Club Chairman Zakhele Dlamini said he was happy with the performance of the athletes and they showed great improvement from last year.

“They did well and I was left impressed. They are still young and they are all pupils. I believe that the future is bright for them and we had to work hard and also do compete a lot in international events,” he said.

The next event for the athletes will be the FSRA Marathon billed for August in Lobamba.
