MBABANE – They are currently hoisting the Eswatini Flag in Cyprus.


The Eswatini students who are based in Cyprus have proven that they are not only good at their academics but are also good in sports.
This is after Team Eswatini advanced to the quarterfinals of the Futsal tournament dubbed ‘Cup of Nations’.


In their opening game they managed to beat Zambia 2-0, and went on to eliminate Pakistan to book a spot in the last eight. Fisokuhle Khumalo who is one of the players in the team said they were happy to qualify for the quarterfinals.


 “We have joined a Futsal tournament here in Cyprus, styled as Cup of nations, representing our kingdom, and have currently progressed into the quarter-final stage of the Cup of Nations,” Khumalo said.


“It’s a Cup of Nations with all the nations in the university, that are able to form teams to participate in said tournament. It’s always played in the 2nd semester, starting in early May and ending in a week or two,” he added.

He said teams get to design kits and put their flags on them, and attend draws during the opening ceremony. “This year’s tournament is a knockout tournament and Eswatini boys were seeded against Zambia and we managed to beat them 2-0.We then played Pakistan in the eliminations stage, where we won 2-0,” he disclosed.


He also highlighted that Team Eswatini got massive support from other Southern African countries during the eliminations stage.
“Zambia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe rallied behind the Eswatini boys and it helped motivate us to win the game against Pakistan,” he said. He also highlighted that their next game will be against Morocco.


Team Eswatini is coached by   Remy Nsanzubhoro and the squad consists of Clarence Azigi, Collin Zeeman, Banelisi Dlamini, Mehluli Shabangu, ShimphiweDlamini, Charlie Terrblanche, Mncedisi Tembe, Sakhile Gina, Lusanda Ngcamphalala, and Fisokuhle Khumalo.
The teams that also qualified for the last eight are Nigeria, Libya, Turkey, Morocco, Turkey, Iran, Sudan and Syria.
