PIGGS’ PEAK – Barely 13 days after Malanti Chiefs and Burundian player Papy Faty passed away after collapsing here and later died the same day, another player has collapsed at this modest venue.

This was during Chiefs’ home game against Young Buffaloes in an MTN Premier League clash which ended in a 1-all draw.
Chiefs midfielder Sifiso Makhubu was involved in a head collision with Buffaloes defender Dumsani Mdluli a minute before half-time and he collapsed immediately after the incident.

Team doctors were called in by referee Thokozani Dlamini to attend to the player and a yellow card was given to the Buffaloes defender. Lindokuhle Fakudze replaced the injured Makhubu.

Almost 10 minutes went by while the team doctors were treating Makhubu but the injury seemed so serious that he had to be taken to hospital. Just in the similar scenario to Papy’s incident, there were no paramedics and Malanti coach Raymond Dlamini’s car was used to ferry Makhubu to hospital where he was treated and discharged.

Upon returning from hospital, he went back to the team’s dressing room. He was seen holding his nose and he started bleeding from his nostrils and two paramedics’ vehicles were seen arriving at the stadium.

By the time the paramedics arrived at the stadium, the game had played for 83 minutes. They treated the player but he was later taken back to the hospital for further check-ups.

When called for comment, the player confirmed he had been admitted twice in hospital.“During the first time at the hospital, they told me I needed to rest and they discharged me and the second time they told me the same thing. They said I would be better and gave me some tablets and medicine. I am feeling better now but I am still in pain,” Makhubu said.

The team captain, Siyabonga Nkambule, related how devastating it was when they saw their teammate lying unconsciously on the ground. “It was too much to handle and we were worried that the incident would be worse. We are even contemplating using another stadium as our host venue because clearly there is something wrong with Killarney. We were relieved to see him in the stadium after he was discharged,” Nkambule said.
