MBABANE – Qualify for CHAN tournament and get rich.

That is the message to the national side Sihlangu as they continue their road to the African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals to be staged in Cameroon between January and February next year. Qualifying for the 16-team tournament, which is for players campaigning in their domestic leagues, will earn Kostadin Papic’s men US$ 175 000 (about E2.4 million). This is prize money for finishing fourth in each of the four groups at the finals. The winners will pocket US$ 1 250 000 (E17.6 million), as per the revised prize money for the period 2017 to 2020.

Sihlangu have just started their journey in the first hurdle and they need to shake off Malawi to reach the next round of the qualifiers. The sides met in the first leg last Saturday at Mavuso Sports Centre and fired blanks. Sihlangu need a win or at least a draw by a goal or more in the return match on May 10 in Blantyre, Malawi, to progress to the next phase to face Angola. The qualifiers are played on a zonal basis. At least 47 teams are engaged in the battle for 15 places to join the hosts at the sixth CHAN finals tournament.

If Sihlangu pass both the Malawi and Angola tests, they are likely to face the likes of Zambia Botswana and Seychelles in the third and final round later this year. It will be during the weekend of September 20-22 for the first leg. The final leg decider will be played on the weekend of October 18-20. Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe said anything was possible, as all teams had equal chances.
