MAPUTO – They proved their worth and brought home silver and bronze medals.  Eswatini bodybuilders were a marvel to watch during the Maputo Classic bodybuilding competition that was held in Gilberto Mendes on Saturday.

It all went down to strength, confidence and muscle showdown before a packed theatre where bodybuilders displayed their skills to impress the judges and secure a spot in the upcoming Arnold Classic Africa to be held in May 17 until 19 in Sandton South Africa. The competition was too high and Eswatini bodybuilders stood up to the challenge on stage where they competed in various categories which are men’s physique, classic body building, wellness fitness and beach body.

Royal Eswatini Police Services athletes Sanele Ndlamlendze and Nkosini Masuku both scooped silver medals, while Sboniso Ndlela earned a bronze. Ndlamlendze and Ndlela competed in the bodybuilding Under-70kg category and Masuku in Under-90kg.

First time silver medallist, Masuku, wowed the judges with his poses and stage presence. He was given a standing ovation by the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) judges who appreciated him and motivated him to pursue his dream.

“I am short of words. I’m amazed and did not expect it. I was not prepared for this competition as I was training for Barbosa Classic billed for July. I would like to thank my team and boss Commander Vusi Masuku, who encouraged me to do it,” said Masuku. IFBB judge Paulo Escudeizo also applauded the Eswatini athletes, stating that they needed more competition exposure in order to be at the top of their game. He highlighted that most of the athletes needed to improve on their stage poses which are crucial in competitions.

“The turnout was amazing and the competition was intense.  Bodybuilding is not yet too popular in the southern region and some of the athletes need to know which physique they get in a work out in perfecting that aspect,” said Escudeizo. He mentioned that the IFBB judges would deliberate on who gets the invitation to the Arnold Classic Africa and when selected, an athlete would receive a letter of invitation. He further encouraged them to visit the IFBB website to see where the next Arnold Classic qualifiers shows would be held.
