MBABANE – The Eswatini Chess Federation seminar took off to a great start last Tuesday at Manzini Caritus.

The seminar was a three-day event hosted by the Eswatini Chess Federation (ECF) and saw an attendance of 23 local chess players, including the country’s creme de la creme, Mbongeni Mabuza, Fungai Matahwa, Sikhanyiso Sihlongonyane and Thobile Mthethwa among others.

Zambian guest instructor, FIDE Clement Mayimbo, facilitated the proceedings of the event. Some of the topics that he delved on were the basic methods of teaching chess, educational benefits of chess and the history of the board game.

Mayimbo also addressed the one major topic which the ECF is currently working on improving and that is the limited number of female chess players in the country. He highlighted on the challenges faced by girls and boys in relation to their differences, further discussing ways on how to overcome them.
“It is crucial for a chess trainer to fully comprehend the hardships faced by both girls and boys and further make it a priority to resolve and implement solutions towards them,” he said.

Mayimbo is a certified FIDE instructor, a master of chess arts and possesses deep insight from both a player’s and trainer’s perspective. From Friday to Sunday, he conducted a senior players’ training, which featured 10 female and male players, where he analysed each player’s skills and provided them with coaching. ECF president, Dumisani Msibi, said the aim of the seminar was to produce local qualified chess trainers according to the standard of FIDE.

“The seminar is part of the Federation’s high performance programme aimed at improving the quality of Eswatini chess and producing players who can stand their grounds in international competitions,” said Msibi.
The president further announced the election of Nosimilo Mkhonta into the position of the ECF secretary.

He mentioned that Mkhonta, who is also a chess player, was the perfect choice for the post and would be of great assistance in managing and organising the federation’s calendar of events. Mkhonta said she was grateful to be trusted with the responsibility of chess federation and further announced that round three and four of the Eswatini Chess League would continue on April 27 at EFA Training Centre in Manzini.
