MBABANE – To celebrate the Kingdom’s heritage, the theme for the 100th Mbabane club parkrun will be traditional Eswatini attire.

The weekly parkrun will be commemorating its 100th run this Saturday at Mbabane Club, starting at 8am. The weekly run or walk is a proudly Eswatini initiative aimed at promoting health and fitness in the kingdom as part of achieving a healthy and productive nation. Members of the public are invited to come in numbers to participate in this historic celebration. Registered parkrunners are reminded to bring along their barcodes and newcomers and tourists are more than welcome.

The Mbabane parkrun takes place every Saturday at Mbabane Club and this is not a race but a 5km timed run which offers local community members, young and old, an opportunity to come together on a regular basis, while promoting physical activity and outdoor appreciation of nature, irrespective of their abilities. Most athletes use the parkrun as part of their training routine.

momentum
Parkrun has gained momentum since its inception. Runners from various sporting codes such as basketball, cycling, football, netball are now taking part. The average number of runners per week is 87. One of this year’s highlights was when close to 100 Waterford KaMhlaba students attended the park run as part of their annual mountain hike training. After the run, athletes get an opportunity to socialise and share stories about their experiences and upcoming events over a cup of coffee, courtesy of City office Machines Company.

“Come dressed in Eswatini traditional clothing or national flag colours and be part of this auspicious celebration.
attendance
‘‘We are hoping to have quite a high attendance and all members of the public are invited to join. We also hope to have visitors from other countries as we look forward to another wonderful 100 runs accomplishment,” said the event’s organiser, Leon Drinkwater. Drinkwater further acknowledged all volunteers who dedicate themselves every week making the event a success. Last week’s volunteers were Karen Cooper, Nonhlanhla Makhanya, Sandile Nkambule, Yunus Omar, Neil Robinson, Kirsten Robinson and Frankie Williams.
