LOBAMBA - Mbabane Highlanders are losing the grip in the title race as they settled for a 1-all draw against Vovovo.

With the Mbabane derby on the horizon, the ‘Bull’ showed little improvement under the stand-in coach, Bongani Mhlongo, after the 1-4 defeat to Young Buffaloes in the Ingwenyama Cup final that ended Zimbabwean coach Saul Chaminuka’s contract. It was not a good start for Highlanders in the match as they struggled to create scoring chances with little action in the first half. Both goalkeepers had nothing much to do in the first half of the game. Highlanders could have scored in the 25th minutes’ but Menzi Sithole blasted the ball wide having controlled it well inside the area.

The second half saw the game coming back to life as both teams surged forward for a lead. Highlanders Xolani ‘Chocco’ Sibandze failed to finish off a rebound from the cross bar three minutes into the game with the first shot from Thabiso Mokenkoane. It was Vovovo who created more chances and it came as a surprise when Mokenkoane blasted in the ball into the net having received a pass from Menzi Sithole inside six yards. While Highlanders were settling in from the celebration. Vovovo attacked on a counter and goalkeeper Khanyakwezwe Shabalala foul troublesome Sibusiso Thwala inside the box with referee Mbongeni Shongwe easily pointing to the spot kick. Vovovo trusted strike Leon Manyisa sent Shabalala the wrong way to equalise. Mokenkoane should have converted with seven minutes remaining after being gifted the ball inside the box after poor communication in Vovovo defence but he shot wide.
