MBABANE – The history in the making for taekwondo as close to 200 artists will be kicking their way up during the Swazi Tigers/Next Generation championships.

The championships are billed for Bosco Skills Centre, Manzini on Saturday, starting at 9am. Swati Tigers and Next Generation are taekwondo teams affiliated with the Eswatini Taekwondo Association (ETA). ETA Secretary Mbongeni ‘Ndo’ Sibandze said the championships are level 1 which means all ages and all belts club championship which means it is open to everyone. “About 176 entries from the different Dojos have been received and registration closed last week Friday. There are still more Dojos and athletes who are interested but our registration system cannot accept any more as it is closed,” he said.

Sibandze said the competition would be divided into two parts, Poomsae competition and Kyorugi Competition. “This being an all level competition, the technical team will also use it to scout for new talent especially the juniors and Cadets.  Shortlisted athletes will then undergo a series of assessment and training programme in preparation for ANOCA youth games to be hosted by Lesotho in 2022. We also have the World Cadet Championship in August in Uzbekistan. We hope to send a team of four artists, two boys and two girls,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sibandze urged the public to continue voting for their favourite athlete for the Sports Star Award in the Swaziland National Sport and Recreation Council (SNSRC) National Sports Awards. There are three athletes from taekwondo who have made the final list. They are Lukhele Melusi (Junior Sportsman) Mahlalela Sikhulile (Junior Sports Woman) and Dlamini Thandukukhanya (Senior Sportsman). “We are fully behind all our athletes but the public will vote for the favourite Sports Star. We wish all the finalists the best of luck,” he said.
