MBABANE – The weekly timed 5km Parkrun is gaining popularity and yesterday hosted first-time runners and visitors from United States of America and the Republic of South Africa.

This was the 95th edition of the Mbabane Club Parkrun, which takes place every Saturday starting from 7:45am and most runners normally complete it within 30 minutes. South African veteran runner Jan Dries, who is a member of Ebotse Parkrun, was also among yesterday’s runners. He is currently in the kingdom for a vacation and has completed over 250 Parkruns in a space of five years. He said he had a wonderful experience and promised to join the weekly run whenever he is in the kingdom.

“This was my 263rd Parkrun and I had a tough but fun experience here. I heard about Mbabane Parkrun and as a veteran runner I felt interested in experiencing a different one as compared to my country. It is quite impressive to see both the young and old taking charge of their health through exercise,” said Dries.

Erica Coastes from the United States of America said she was in the kingdom visiting a friend in the capital city. She clocked 20 minutes.

“I had a great experience even though the scenery was a bit challenging considering the hills and slopes and opposed to my country which is pretty much flat. Otherwise the kingdom of Eswatini has kind-hearted people and the runners have guided me, especially around the golf course, to avoid clashing with the golfers. I am very proud of myself and I will definitely join the run in my next visit,” she said.

Grade VII Usutu Forest pupil Kuhle Dlamini also gave a remarkable performance, finishing in position 27. This was her seventh run and she appealed to more scholars to join  the Parkrun, stating that it made her fit and mentally refreshed after a week of school work.
