VELEKHAYA, TONY FOR SPORTS AWARDS

Vilakati won the Best Coach Award then and was nominated along with then Captain Tony ‘TT’ Tsabedze who is the only nominee from Swallows this time for the Sportsman of the Year, an award he won as well.
Other nominees in Mthethwa’s category are Taekwondo coach, Mancoba Motsa, Correctional volleyball’s Mbuso Vilakati, Oyama Karate’s Shihan Mfanafuthi  Vilakati, Swim Lab coach Welcome Nhlabatsi, Sihlangu’s assistant coach Velekhaya Mthethwa and Boxing coach Fanana Dlamini.

Meanwhile, Tony will be competing with golfer Sifiso Vilane, boxer Zweli Dlamini, chess player Sikhanyiso Sihlongonyane and 200m and 100m sprinter Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa, swimmer Simanga Dlamini and taekwondo artists Thandukukhanya Mahlalela under the sportsman award. The second edition of the awards will be held at Esibayeni Lodge’s Esangweni Hall on March 30.
Unveiling the nominees was the Swaziland National Sport and Recreation Council (SNSRC) Business Development Manager Zama Tsabedze. This was during a press briefing which was held at the council offices yesterday which was also attended by the council’s Philsiwe Mhlanga.

Also forming part of the nominees in different categories is 50metre backstroke swimming specialist Robyn Young. She broke the national record for the 50m backstroke with a time of 33:34 seconds from previous 33:87 seconds. This was during the Youth Olympic Games in October 2018 which were held in Argentina.


The 18-year-old swimmer has been nominated along taekwondo artists Sikhulile Mahlalela, judo duo in Mitchell Amor Shen and Lamulela Magagula in the Junior Sportswoman category. Also nominated for this category are karate artists in Safiya Mansoor, long distance specialist athlete Khanyisile Hlatshwayo and young footballer Simangele Sikhondze in the Junior Sportswoman category.
Nominated for the Best Team Award are the Taekwondo Nnational team, Correctional Sunrise Ladies Volleyball team, Under-17 National Football team, Senior Netball Team and National Bass Angling team.
Speaking during the briefing, Tsabedze said the purpose of briefing was to announce that the process of submitting the nominees has concluded.

“We are here to share the long list of nominees. We have 14 categories and we have new category of administrator. Under the new category is basketball Bonginkhosi ‘Dee’ Shabangu and Eswatini Football Association’s (EFA) Technical Director Bhekisisa’Bizzah’ Mkhonta. We will, however, shortlist the nominees to three, they will be announced during the gala night,” Tsabedze said.
He also disclosed that they have not included all the categories.


“We have a category of life time achievement but you will note those accolades will be announced by the honourableing minister for sports. Also not announced is the award for the Sports Star of the Year. It will also be announced during the night of the awards,” he said.
