BIG BEND – He is a record-breaker!The Mbabane Highlanders’ South African import Thabiso Mokenkoane surpassed Portugal and former Real Madrid superstar Cristiano ‘CR7’ Ronaldo’s five-goal record in a single match (twice in 2015 La Liga action) – that was the highest in a single match in 2015, at least in this generation of the current professional footballers while his rival Lionel Messi managed four in one match.


Otherwise, Australia’s striker Archie Thompson holds the record of highest goals as he netted 13 in their 31-0 win over American Samoa renowned as whipping boys of football in 2001.
Mokenkoane has outshone both superstars and this was not the first time he achieved this milestone. He did it in South Africa back in 2008 and now has done it again, proving that the touch that took to him Absa Premiership outfit Amazulu ‘Solo Inje’ (it’s still there).

He was the destruction boy for First Division League basement side City Warriors as Highlanders went on the rampage to harvest nine goals to nothing. Only Highlanders’ Captain and winger Xolani ‘Chocco’ Sibandze scored between Mokenkoane’s six-goal rout but he had already netted a brace in the 3rd and 25th minute, Sibandze was on target for their third in the 32nd before Mokenkoane who celebrated a little and always rushed to collect the ball from the net added two more before the break in the 37th and 44th.


His 44th minute srike was a brilliant header from a quality left flank cross by a dazzling Sihle Ndaba who is also South African. Mokenkoane scored four goals in the first half.
A minute into the second half he made it 6-0, much to the amusement of the over 1 000 crowd. They were firing from all cylinders and it was clear they were intent on adding more goals as Mokenkoane rightly put it at the end of the match that he had his eyes on the Top Scorer’s Award but also focused on helping his club win games and titles. He revealed this was the second time he managed six goals in a match and he was excited about it.


‘Chocco’ added his second of the night six minutes from time while substitute midfielder Phumlane Ngwenya scored two minutes after him to leave Highlanders the highest scorers in the tournament so far after games on Friday and yesterday in the tournament.


They are now in the Last 16 and also finalists for the first time in the Ingwenyama Cup while also competing for honours in the MTN Premier League.
In this match, they played without South African midfielder Vusumuzi Zungu and exceptional young defender Vusi Vilakati, the former on compassionate leave while the latter has an injury.
