MBABANE – They endured 40.16km on Saturday. Their target is to cover a total of 400km within the month of February. Manzini Striders Athletic Club’s first long run was a great success and saw over 40 athletes challenge their endurance and strength on a long run which kicked off from Mavuso Sports Ground, through Mahhala, Nhlambeni, Zakhali and back to the starting point.

Their first route managed to cover precisely 40.16km
The club’s Public Relations Officer, Happiness Mthethwa, said to meet their target, they would cover 10km from Monday to Friday, starting at 4:15am and then embark on a 50km long run every Saturday. She said this fitness goal was in preparation of cross-border races which are South Africa’s Kosmos three-in-one race, the Two Oceans Marathon, Iren Race and Comrades’ Marathon. Their first stop will be at the 73km Kosmos Race billed for March 9.

“We want to break the record this year and complete 100km every week. Our first long run was a great success. All runners were high spirited and all clad in lime green outfits, which is Striders’ theme colour. We also had a catering car which provided us with water, fruits and energy boosters,” said Mthethwa.
Also standing up to the challenge were individual runners from Mbabane and Ngculwini. This record- breaking fitness initiative is open to all runners who wish to improve their fitness and health.  Participation is free of charge. Weekend routes are Ngculwini to Bulunga, Mavuso Sports Ground to Mdzimba Mountain, Luyengo to Sicunusa and finally, Mavuso Sports Ground to Sigcineni.

“This challenge is not restricted to Manzini Striders but open to all members of the public who wish to challenge their strength,” added Mthethwa.
