MBABANE – Not long ago he shook the local football circles when he joined the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) presidential elections.
That is renowned Shiselweni Regional Football Association (S.R.F.A) former Chairman Mashumi Shongwe.

He was a tough challenger for long serving president, Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa in the last elections until he was beaten hands down on the eventual day, a situation he duly accepted.
“He is Rangers F.C. PLE Board of Governor,” said an impeccable source.

Appointed

Upon checking with the PLE’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Simanga Nhleko yesterday, it turned Shongwe was indeed appointed as a PLE Governor by ‘Rangers from First Division’.
“The chairman, already has been informed as well and has welcomed Rangers decision,” Nhleko confirmed.
Reached for comment, Shongwe excitedly confirmed the latest news.

“It’’s a family club, only I wasn’t involved in its structures but right now, they have seen it fit due to my experience that I move to the Chairmanship as that’s where I can be better utilised. So yes, I have joined the PLE Governors,” Shongwe said.

He explained that he had always been part of the club as a family member and was involved in its sponsorship and marketing until the decision to make him the chairman. Rangers’ Manager Thokozani Ndzinisa also confirmed the appointment. “We have four directors in the team and that is Zakhele Hlophe, Dumisani Kunene, Mashumi and MP Muzi Kunene, who decided in a meeting they had recently to appoint Mashumi as our representative in all PLE Board meetings,” he said.

Administration

He said they considered a lot of things, including Shongwe’s experience in football administration and their ambition to gain elite promotion as much as their mandate now was to avoid relegation. Meanwhile, Shongwe also qualifies to stand for the EFA presidential elections if he so wishes in the future.
However, he asked not to comment on that one, saying “I am happy at family club level.”
